It was -31°C with a -40°C windchill (9 km/hr head wind) this morning. It took me an hour to get the kids to school and the sitter, then in to work. Never mind the amount of time it took to get suited up this morning (and to figure out my 'system' anew this year). I guess my winter cycling season is officially here.
Three Golden Rules of Winter Cycling:
- No Whining

Another 2 degrees colder for the ride this morning at -33C (8km wind but a partial tail-wind this time). The ride seemed much quicker than yesterday, I didn't feel like I was plodding along so much. I pumped up a low tire (originally kept low to aid traction but it was too low) which helped, and I figured out my clothing system better. Added a pair of wool pants to the layering, and exchanged the cycling gore-tex pants for a looser fitting shell rain pants. Also added a wool scarf to keep the drafts out from my chest.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem I had was my freewheel getting stiff and failing to engage properly until I'd spun my cranks a couple of times. That was a problem that was progressing, but I made it to work just fine.
