Kate Weekes Kickstarter Campaign
A few years ago we hosted Kate Weekes for a house concert. We loved meeting Kate and loved her music. Now she's ready to put together the next album and in order to do so running a kickstarter campaign to fund the recording session.
Kate lives in Whitehorse, Yukon, and writes music that appeals to me as a paddler and outdoorsperson.
If you read this blog, then you probably have an interest in the north, paddling, the outdoors. If you enjoy this blog, odds are good you'll enjoy Kate's music, too. Give her project a boost and contribute $20 or more and get yourself some great music in the process. Win - win.
Maybe it's time we host another house concert!

Chris Hadfield & Music Monday
I'm a science guy and I love music, so this is pretty awesome.
(p.s. Chris Hadfield is a paddler, and it was his brother's stove plans that I used when we built ours a few years ago. Chris & Dave have been referred to in this blog a few times over the years.)

Swim Drink Fish Music
Where have I been all this time? Although I've been vaguely aware of the Riverkeepers organization for some time, I just learned about this component of Riverkeepers called "The Swim Drink Fish Music Club."
Artists + Waterkeepers = Swimmable, Drinkable, Fishable Future from SwimDrinkFishMusic on Vimeo.
The list of musicians involved is great and includes Elliott Brood, Great Lake Swimmers, Ohbijou, Dave Bidini, Gord Downie, The Sadies, The Gertrudes, Violet Archers, Sarah Harmer, Bruce Cockburn, Broken Social Scene, and even Pete Seeger, plus many more (I recognize the Canadian indie bands, but there are American bands and others).
As Tim Vesely of the Violet Archers states in the intro to a song, "swim, drink, fish, music, that's four of my favourite things to do right there. How could I not want to get involved?"
While you are at it, check out North Saskatchewan Riverkeeper which works to protect the river that runs just 40km from my home.
The Swim Drink Fish Music Club is an online music and audio experience developed by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper in collaboration with other Waterkeeper organizations across Canada and the United States.Check out the video with Gord Downie narrating. I love the Canadian waterscapes featured throughout. Also, at about 4:02 is the start of a shot showing Waskesiu beach (in Prince Albert National Park). I recognize the swing set & playground where I've spent time with my kids.
The Swim Drink Fish Music Club brings together artists, activists, and citizens just like you who care about clean water. By celebrating the Club's exclusive and rare music, you are contributing to the fight for swimmable, drinkable, fishable water in your community.

Stuff That Works
I heard this Guy Clark song again this morning played by Glenn on CFCR. It's a great song and I love the sentiment. (I've mentioned Guy Clark and his album Boats to Build before on this blog.) The song appears on his recently released live album, Songs and Stories.

Soggy Bottom Boys And Their Constant Sorrows
(I posted this also over on the NSE blog, but it's so good I thought it deserved the re-posting.)
Great idea for a video, but their execution could use some work. ;)
What a great finish!
Thanks to Paddling.net for bringing this video to my attention.

Last Saskatchewan Pirate
This one's for you Dave!
Here's a great song to sing while paddling at the end of a long day in a head wind.
Last Saskatchewan Pirate, originally written and performed by the Arrogant Worms and brought home to the prairies by Captain Tractor.

Put The Sheepdogs On The Rolling Stone
Great local band and hot sensation The Sheepdogs have been selected as one of 16 bands that have the potential to earn a place on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine (not to mention a deal with Atlantic Records and a bunch of other cool stuff). They are the only Canadian band among the 16. Help them out and show some love for this fine Canadian band and their great classic rock sound.

Burning Hell Paddles to the Dawson City Music Festival
This is pretty cool, I heard recently on CBC Radio 3 that The Burning Hell will be playing at the Dawson City Music Fetival (#1 on the list of music festivals I want to visit some day!) this summer. What's cool about that is how they are getting there. They will first drive across the country to Whitehorse, an epic journey in itself. However, not satisfied to do things the usual way, they will then be hopping into canoes and PADDLING the 730 kilometers to Dawson City down the Yukon River. What a helluva way to do it!
In related news, The Burning Hell write on their blog about why Bruno, SK, has the "coolest indie music scene in Canada." You can read all about it at http://www.wearetheburninghell.com/node/106. Here's an excerpt:
And in other news, I just realised the The Burning Hell member Mathias Kom is half of a duo with Kim Barlow known as Spring Breakup. Kim & Mathias played a house concert in my basement last year.

Sorry Montreal: your glory days are over, and no amount of fires or arcades or little moustaches, tight pants and 80s sunglasses can save you. Bruno, Saskatchewan is the best indie music scene in Canada.Who knew?

Tourism Saskatchewan Video
Several months ago I came across this video on the Tourism Saskatchewan website. At the time, I contacted Tourism Saskatchewan asking for permission to share the video on my blog. They said no. That's too bad, since it's free advertising for them and the more it gets spread around, the more people that see it and the more value they get from the video. However, since then they have posted the video to YouTube so I gather that they have finally seen the light and understand why modern advertising now often aims to achieve something that is often called a viral video. Since it has been made widely available on YouTube where they have enabled embedding, I gather then that I have permission to share this with you.

Paint The Whole World Green
The Riders won over the Stamps last night in an exciting game. That win meant they finished the regular season in first place in the West!
Two weeks from now the Riders will be playing in the Western Final at home in Regina.

Steve Earle at the 2009 Ottawa Bluesfest · CBC Radio 2
Steve Earle at the 2009 Ottawa Bluesfest · CBC Radio 2 - Concerts On Demand
I'm finally getting around to listening to this concert that first aired on CBC Radio 2 earlier in the summer. Like most everything I've ever heard from Steve Earle, it's fantastic. In this concert he plays a healthy selection of Townes Van Zandt songs, no surprise at any Steve Earle concert, but even less so since he recently released the album "Townes".
